To scan QR codes, your smart phone must be able to take a photo and to connect to the internet (iPhone, Blackberry, most newer cell phones). You’ll need QR code-reading software; you can download a program that will work on your particular phone at http://m.funbeach.com/reader. Click on the link for your phone manufacturer and then pick your phone model out of the list. You will be given a list of compatible readers for your mobile device.

Download the software and follow the installation instructions, which are very simple. Once you’ve chosen a reader and installed it try scanning a QR code. You will need to have the whole code visible on your screen. It will work best if you hold the phone’s camera 6″ to 1′ away from the code.

It might take a couple of tries at first to get the hang of it but soon you will be on your way. Here’s a code to get you started:

This is the time of year when the state Tourism office is gearing up to do its annual directory. A reminder: There are two distinct directories being put out. The one published by Washington State Tourism, which is called ‘The Washington State Travel Planner,’ is the one which is sent to people who inquire about our state through the Tourism’s 800 phone number or website. It is also used by state Tourism as they travel throughout the states, Europe and Japan marketing the region.

The other book, called the Washington State Visitors Guide, is put out by the Washington State Hotel & Lodging Association and is available through that association’s website. Both books are distributed to visitors bureaus throughout the state.

Because we believe that the state’s own book is the best value for our dollars, the VIsitors Bureau places its ads in the Travel Planner and not the Visitors Guide. While each of you needs to make your own decision and some of you have the funding to advertise in both directories, please remember that your placement in the Travel Planner guarantees that your business will be accessible to all the potential visitors reached by Washington State Tourism. That site, www.experiencewa.com, sees over 3 million discreet visitors annually. It’s a bargain in advertising!

LONG BEACH, Wash. – Washington State Patrol troopers will be out in force during Memorial Day weekend searching for drivers who are putting other motorists at risk.

From Friday through Monday approximately 75 extra troopers will patrol the roadways looking for drivers who are speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and those who fail to buckle up. Troopers will also be on the lookout out for vehicles carrying unsecured loads.

Members of the public are encouraged to call 9-1-1 if they spot aggressive or impaired drivers. The license plate number and a description of the vehicle will be helpful in assisting troopers in locating the offenders.

The WSP will also be using aircraft to crack down on aggressive and impaired drivers. Pacific and Wahkiakum counties will have three additional troopers to focus on DUI and seat belt violations on May 22, one additional trooper to focus on speeding violations Saturday and one additional trooper to focus on speeding violations Sunday.
